The squid fishery is located in the Belawan area, Medan, in the North Sumatra province of Indonesia and is part of FMA 571. The main purpose is to develop a Fisheries Management Plan for squid, working alongside IPB University (Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences) and the Indonesia Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Department (MMAF) for eventual roll-out to other squid fishing communities in Fisheries Management Area (FMA) 571. We had 4 drivers over our 3 week trip and Johannes is undoubtedly the best.Recognising the need for sustainable fisheries (governance, economic and social development), the squid fishery enrolled onto the MSC Fish for Good Indonesia programme in 2019. Johannes gave us a real insight into Indonesian life tailoring our trio as we went as he got to know us and that we liked the genuine, off the beaten track experience and we can recommend him and his services unreservedly. His SUV car was comfortable and with AC and his driving was considerate and safe (a real rarity in Indonesia as we have found). We can honestly say he was professional at all times, prompt to reply and advise us ahead of our trip. The guided trip up the Mountain for sunrise was fantastic - pace was adjusted to our age and the freshly brewed coffee at the top was a thoughtful gesture and very much appreciated. In the end we hired Johannes not only to escort us up the Mount for sunrise (an amazing experience) but also to drive us for Bukit Lawang to Berastagi, give us a 3 day tour and then drive us on to Parapat to get to Lake Toba. We contacted him for a guided trip up Mount Sibanyak but were quickly impressed with his honest and helpful advice for our plans in the Berastagi area.
